Abstract

Although the osseo-integrated implant treatment in elderly has a good chance of long-term success, the biological, biomechanical and esthetic complications can occur. Pathologic changes of the tissue around the implant can be classified into peri-implant disease; inflammatory change limited to the soft tissue around the implant is called peri-implant mucositis, and progressive bony loss accompanied with the soft tissue inflammation around the implant is called periimplantitis. Particularly in elderly, these can occur due to inflammatory, biomechanic and esthetic complications led by the alterations in tissue, healing and immunity. Therefore, it is critical to verify the causes and factors of the peri-implant disease in elderly and to apply proper antibiotic and surgical treatment and careful maintenance.
